B mode stands for engine Braking mode. It’s a feature in Toyota Hybrid vehicles—like the Corolla, RAV4, and Camry Hybrid—that helps slow your car using the electric motor rather than relying entirely on your brake pads.
When engaged, B mode increases regenerative braking. This means your hybrid captures more energy when decelerating, feeding it back into the battery—while also reducing wear and tear on your brake system.
Living and driving around Kalamunda means you’re no stranger to steep inclines and long downhill stretches. B mode is especially useful:
While B mode is helpful for hilly or downhill driving, you don’t need it on flat roads or during regular city driving. In normal conditions, your Toyota Hybrid is already designed to optimise efficiency using standard regenerative braking in Drive (D) mode.
Switching to B mode is easy:
1. While in Drive (D), shift the gear lever to B.
2. The dash will update to show you’re in B mode.
3. Shift back to D when you're done descending or want to return to regular driving.
