How to Use B Mode in Your Toyota Hybrid or EV
Make the most of every downhill drive through the hills
If you drive a Toyota Hybrid or EV in the Perth Hills, you’ve probably heard of “B mode”—
but what exactly is it, and when should you use it?

it’s no surprise many of our customers ask how to drive smarter (and safer) through the hills. That’s where B mode comes in.
What is B Mode?
B mode stands for engine Braking mode. It’s a feature in Toyota Hybrid vehicles—like the Corolla, RAV4, and Camry Hybrid—
that helps slow your car using the electric motor rather than relying entirely on your brake pads.
When engaged, B mode increases regenerative braking. This means your hybrid captures more energy when decelerating,
feeding it back into the battery—while also reducing wear and tear on your brake system.
When Should You Use B Mode?
Living and driving around Kalamunda means you’re no stranger to steep inclines and long downhill stretches. B mode is especially useful:
- On downhill roads: B mode can help maintain a steady speed without constant braking.
- In stop-start hill traffic: Reduce brake fade during prolonged low-speed descents.
- To extend brake life: Preserve your brake pads when coasting down hills like Welshpool Road East or Gooseberry Hill.
Heads up: B mode doesn’t make your car faster or more powerful—it’s all about control and efficiency during deceleration.
When Not to Use B Mode
While B mode is helpful for hilly or downhill driving, you don’t need it on flat roads or during regular city driving. In normal conditions, your Toyota Hybrid is already designed to optimise efficiency using standard regenerative braking in Drive (D) mode.
How to Activate B Mode
Switching to B mode is easy:
- While in Drive (D), shift the gear lever to B.
- The dash will update to show you’re in B mode.
- Shift back to D when you're done descending or want to return to regular driving.
