Something extremely positive that came from recent times is a renewed appreciation for just how lucky we have it here in Australia. This is quite possibly the most holiday-worthy place on earth. With interstate border closures finally a thing of the past, load up the playlist and pack some car snacks - let’s get back to the wide-open road! NSW: Oxley Wild Rivers National Park
An outdoor playground for any adventurous spirit – the gorgeously gorge-filled Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, contains world heritage listed rainforest, historic sites and waterfalls.
Around 6 hours each way from Sydney CBD – make a weekend (or a week) of it!
What to expect:
Hiking, camping, horse riding, fishing, river rafting or just about any outdoor activity really.
VIC: Macedon Ranges
One of Victoria’s truly treasured areas. Packed with beautiful forest scenery and pause-worthy lookout points, the beautiful Macedon area will stimulate your senses with an array of local gourmet food and wine.
Just over an hour from Melbourne CBD so don’t worry if you’ve only got a day to explore, but it’d be worth staying a few nights to try some local drops at the vineyards!
What to expect:
Hiking, camping, mountain biking, romantic getaways, vineyard visits and wildlife spotting.
SA: Flinders Ranges
This is a bit of Australia that somehow seems more Australian than most places – the backdrop of ancient sand dunes that look straight out of a Mad Max film set lead you into an unforgettable authentic outback experience.
Around 5 and a half hours from Adelaide CBD – load up the 4WD, you’ll probably want to spend a bit of time here!
What to expect:
Camping, hiking, 4WDing, sand dune surfing, experience indigenous art and culture.
WA: Kalbarri National Park
If you ever wanted to step inside a Salvadore Dali surrealist painting, here’s your chance. The bizarrely beautiful landscape in Kalbarri boggles the mind and delights the heart.
A bit over 6 hours from Perth CBD – the roads are sealed so you can make the trip with or without a 4WD, aim to spend 3 to 5 days exploring the area.
What to expect:
Camping, surfing, landscape photography, exploring the alien-looking natural wonders.
QLD: Fraser Island
World heritage listed Fraser Island is a literally a paradise, there’s really no other way to describe it. Who needs Hawaii or Tahiti when you have a place like this within Australia? Travellers flock to Fraser Island every year to bask in its natural glory.
You’re looking at around 7 hours out of Brisbane CBD, including the ferry.
What to expect:
The realisation that you’re in one of the most beautiful places on earth – also camping, beach activities, 4WDing and heaps more.
TAS: Freycinet National Park
Pink granite beaches, pristine waters and stunning rainforests make Freycinet National Park in Tassie’s east coast a true bucket-lister.
Just over 2 hours from Hobart CBD with plenty of small coastal towns to check out along the way.
What to expect:
Hiking, camping, snorkelling, cruising, watching the sunset light up pink granite.
With these destinations only being the tip of the iceberg, the local holiday possibilities here are literally endless. Happy travelling!
